What's on in Windermere?

It’s the largest natural lake in the country and it’s surrounded by cool stuff. We have a list of what's on in Windermere and Bowness that includes festivals, theatre, family fun, and ideas for top days out.

This is Cumbria’s most popular town for tourists, and on the must-see route for anyone visiting the county. Windermere has some stunning views and gorgeous walks – and that’s not all. There’s a tonne of events and fun things to do in the town.

First off, this is a great place to keep the kids entertained in Cumbria. Head to The World of Beatrix Potter  attraction and see Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggywinkle, and all the Beatrix Potter favourites.

For film fans, we recommend taking a trip to Royalty Cinema, Bowness, for the latest releases and some special screenings.

For culture fans, there is the stunning Blackwell Arts and Crafts House, at the very bottom of Bowness, with a beautiful permanent collection, and regular exhibitions.

For those who love a bit of music, there’s the new Windermere Rocks the Blues Festival, which has previously been headlined by BB King’s favourite Connie Lush.

If the outdoors is more your thing, you are spoilt for choice. Take a boat out on a Windermere Lakes Cruise, or head up one of the high vantage points for a top look about the lake. We recommend you start off with Orrest Head, a short walk which inspired the famous guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright.

If you’re a bit more daring, or keen to follow in the footsteps of Davina McCall, then maybe you will want to take on the Windermere Great North Swim. This is a mass participation event that brings thousands of people to Lakeland each summer. Never have we seen so many swim caps.

And there’s the on-road annual Brathay Windermere Marathon, one of the most scenic road races in Britain, which is always popular and has associated events for all the family.

If all else fails, you can always take the family to the massive Lakeland – the biggest kitchenware store in the universe, probably. It’s where the company started, and its cafe and huge shop is booming with tourists on rainy days.
