TWO people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a Barrow house.

Cumbria fire and rescue said three engines from Barrow and Walney attended a fire which started in a bedroom on the first floor of a house on Derby Street.

Two casualties suffering smoke inhalation were attended to by ambulance crews. One dog was rescued from the property. 

The fire was extinguished using six breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera. Fire crews were in attendance for approximately one hour and twenty minutes.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said police were contacted just before 10pm on Thursday night.

A spokesman said: "We were contacted by fire colleagues at around 9.50pm last night, making us aware that they were attending a fire in Derby Street.

"The fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

"However, two arrests were made at the scene following reports of people behaving aggressively on the street.

"A 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault.

"A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police constable.

"Both remain in police custody at this time."
