The story is over 150 years old and is still delighting adults and children alike with its nonsensical approach and inspirational characters, The Royal Opera House Encore: Alice in Wonderland is an exuberant ballet by Christopher Wheeldon, based on the enchanting story from Lewis Carroll.

Gather your family and friends this half term for an adventure down the rabbit hole to a land of absolute chaos where tarts are stolen, Mad Hatters have tea parties and the White Rabbit is running very, very late!

Suitable for all ages and offering a special afternoon of entertainment for locals or visitors alike, don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the energy and atmosphere of the London stage, right here in Cumbria. Tucked away just a couple of minutes walk from Cockermouth town centre and easily accessible via public transport, the Kirkgate Centre is the ideal location from which to enjoy a fun filled afternoon.

Sunday 29th October at 2pm is the time when Alice comes to town… or perhaps the town goes to Alice? Either way, leave your looking glass at home and bring double the imagination as you’re taken to a world where sense means nothing and there’s fun around every straight! Whether you’re a lover of ballet, of Alice, or you’ll be experiencing both for the first time, this is a show not to be missed!

Showcasing The Royal Ballet at its very best, world-class dance merges effortlessly with puppetry and projection to create a magical piece of enchanting family entertainment. Streamed live from the Royal Opera House in London, delight as Joby Talbot’s imaginative score blends effortlessly with Bob Crowley’s stunning production design, taking you beyond the rabbit hole and immersing you in the make-believe worlds on the other side.

You’ll be laughing in the aisles as you watch the highly strung Queen of Hearts perform a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty’s famous Rose Adagio then witness a playing card corps de ballet, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter! Keeping to the original tale, the show also incorporates darker moments and you’ll get ‘curiouser and curiouser’ viewing a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the famously unhinged tea party.

You’ll probably never know why a Raven is like a writing desk but as the ballet draws to a close it will be “off with their heads!” to all those daring to grow a mile high in your presence! When your kids wake the next day on a riverbank, covered in leaves, they’ll be forgiven for wondering whether it was all just a dream!
