Chart success beckons for late Furness legend Collie

A LEGEND of the Furness music scene could be set for posthumous success, after one of the final tracks he recorded hit the download charts.

Collie Stewart's collaboration with his friend Kris Coulton, I Need You Now, has reached number six in the 100 Hot New Releases chart on Amazon - sitting side-by-side with the latest singles from Muse and Arcade Fire - as well as climbing as high as number three in the Movers and Shakers chart.

The Northern Irish-born singer-songwriter passed away last month, and the South Cumbrian music community came out in force to pay tribute - hosting concerts in his memory, and two stages at this weekend's Another Fine Fest will also bear his name.

But Kris wanted to do something to get his music heard far beyond the region and has put their song up for download on many of the major digital retailers, with the hope of giving Collie some much-deserved chart success.

Kris says his aim is also to raise as much money as possible for charity: "It's simple really, the hope is just to keep increasing the availability worldwide.

"It's a song that means so much to me, my family and his, and it can now reach and be heard by such a larger audience, including his close network of friend in each country.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone involved and that has downloaded I Need You Know so far.

"Money made from the track will be going to some good causes, including the Chest, Heart and Stroke charity."

Collie had previously had a taste of international success with his old band, Morph, which toured the UK and Ireland in the mid-90s. As a solo artist, he featured on live national TV broadcasts in both the United States and Kuwait, but it is only now, in this digital age, that his music is truly being heard all over the world.

The poignant song, an harmonica-laden acoustic track written about the loss of both men's mothers, has taken on a new significance for his fans.

"Do you know what I like about the song?" asks Kris. "Absolutely everything.

"It most definitely has taken on a new meaning, as Collie is no longer here.

"The overall feedback has been overwhelming from everyone, from close friends and family - ours and his - to people that Collie has performed with over the years and those who have been made aware recently, in England, Ireland and the rest of the world.

"The reception has been one of a great fondness, loss and love."

I Need You Now, by Collie & Kristopher, is available from all major online stores, including Amazon, iTunes, and GooglePlay, with proceeds from the track being donated to charity.
